Always Elegant

If you are a follower of this blog, or a fan on Facebook, you are familiar with the photos (of invitations) I did for Bree at Wedding Tulle. Recently, I spent some time with Bree at her shop, photographing all the fabulousness (!) that is Always Elegant Bridal and Tuxedo. Now I have to say, I think this shop is simply darling. I love the chandeliers that glitter from the ceiling, dripping warm light over a black and white checked floor... makes me feel fancy.

Always Elegant has made it's place on the Knot Northern California's list of top wedding salons both 2010 AND 2011. It is an honor well earned, let me tell you. Before I became friends with Bree, when I was just a bride myself, I went to Always Elegant to find my wedding dress. I went in with a slew of different styles that I liked, and pointed them all out to Bree. Honestly, at the time, I felt a little sorry for her because she had to try and make sense of a mess. Bree pulled 12 or so dresses, and MY DRESS was only the third I tried on. That was the day I learned that she is that good. I proceeded to get all my accessories from her as well... my shoes, veil, and shoe clips that I used for embellishments on my boquet. So, how did I look??

It has been quite a whirlwind these past few months. Holiday photo sessions and naughty treat binges have come and gone (well, I'm still working at the treat binging part...) and here I sit at my computer on January 26, 2011. Holy smokes, would someone press pause already!! Normally, January is a slow month, leaving time for rest and renewal. Well, not this January! 2010 merged seamlessly into 2011, with a jam-packed December giving way to a jam-packed January. Family sessions, Newborn shoots, a wedding... they just keep coming. I can't possibly communicate how excited and thrilled this makes me. One after the other, I have the honor of being the story teller, via camera, of a paragraph, page, or chapter in someone's life. It's amazing, and I LOVE it.
I originally had big plans for January, 2011. I was going to learn Quickbooks, design oh-so-darling packaging for delivering proofs, etc, and most importantly, GET MY WEBSITE UP!! *sigh* What day is this? Yes, January 26, I know, and my website still is not ready. Grrrr. But, I have ventured into Quickbooks, and with some help from Faith at Peasley Design Studio, WiNKS will soon have super fabulous photo (and other stuff) packaging. I'm almost there... just need those finishing touches. Faith will also be (bless her heart!) helping to get my website up. I cannot wait for that day...
So, in the meantime, I'll leave you all with a few of my favorite pics from this past holiday photo session season.

A love affair with Fall (and Bishop's!)

I have to say that Fall is truly my most favorite time of the year. I love everything about it... the crisp air, the rain, the reds, yellows, oranges and browns, fires in the fireplace, cozy anything that touches my skin, hot drinks warming up my hands and my insides, fresh apple cider, sinful foods, pumpkins... I could go on and on. But one of my most anticipated loves of Fall is when Bishop's Pumpkin Farm opens for pumpkin pickin' business! I don't typically have time to get out there often, or to be out there for long, but I ALWAYS make it a point to get out there at least once before the season ends. I cannot express the heartbreak I would experience if I missed out on popcorn balls, pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting, pumpkin & walnut pie with ice cream on top, caramel apples, or apple cider so fresh I can watch the apples get peeled, pressed into juice, bottled, then carried around the corner and put in the cooler for sale!!

Thankfully, a potential tragedy was averted when my friend Jen and I made our way out to Bishop's for the first time this year, only days before they close. We wandered around (Jen hasn't been in years and was surprised to see so many changes!) and indulged in all those guilty pleasures that makes Bishop's so FANTASTIC!

My guilty pleasure... homemade corndog. Look at all the cornbread!!! That is my favorite part!

Jen's guilty pleasure... a ginormous turkey leg! Or, in her words "Holy gigantic radio active turkey legs, Batman!"

We went into the field and found big pumpkins to sit on, since no pumpkin patch visit is truly complete without a picture on a giant pumpkin.

We stopped at Mrs. B's Bakery to get some goodies to take home, and for a piece of pumpkin walnut pie with ice cream on top. Oh, so yummy.......

And of course, we had to get some PUMPKINS!!

Finally, the pumpkins were picked and we headed back to the car (parked in Ewe B. Wooley Row...heehee) feeling warm and happy, despite the chilly breeze in the air. I suppose hanging with a good friend will do that to you. :)

Seemed like a day for sharing.

I am excited to announce that WiNKS Photography will officially have a website (launch date TBA), not just a blog! Getting the website ready for viewing is a lot of work, let me tell you. Website building is a whole new learning experience for me, especially due to the fact that in no way am I a computer saavy person! But I try, and I learn, and it all eventually comes together. I am not sure exactly when the site will be ready, but every day it gets a little closer, and you can be sure that I will announce it from the rooftops when the day finally arrives!

Aside from the website, this busy little "B" has been hard at work on a project for Bree at Always Elegant Bridal & Tuxedo and Wedding Tulle. Bree is an amazing and talented designer, and I have had the opportunity to photograph her wedding invitation line. These invitations are so beautifully and elegantly done, I am proud to be able to photograph them and show the world what creativity lies within her!

Now, I don't usually blog about the personal happenings in my life on WiNKS, but as it continues to grow the lines between personal and professional overlap more and more. For instance, some time in the next couple of weeks one of my very best and oldest friends will be giving birth to her first child. I thought nothing could make me realize how much we had grown up like watching each other get married, but I had no idea that that was just the beginning. Now she is having a baby, and I will be there in the first few days of that little person's life to photograph all the divinities that make him or her human. And I can't wait.

In August, my husband and I went on a trip (technically honeymoon!) to Ireland. Can I just tell you....AMAZING. I had debated whether or not I was going to take "The Beast" (as we like to call my CANON) or just a small little point and shoot camera that would be easy to carry around. Honestly I didn't debate for long because I knew I would regret not taking it. Smart decision. Ireland was so breathtakingly beautiful, and how do I capture beauty best? With the camera.

Holiday 2010 MINI SESSIONS

Many of you have asked, and I have listened! So, I would like to announce Mini Sessions for the 2010 Holiday Season on October 17, 2010. The sessions will be 20-25 minutes, cost $150 and will include:

A mix of classic posed and natural, candid shots (as much as we can squeeze into 25 minutes!)
Time and processing
Up to 15 final, edited images
25 holiday cards, envelopes included, OR a full resolution CD of images for an additional $30.

**Mini Sessions are a great opportunity to get some updated and fun shots of the kids and/or small families (5 people or less), just in time for those Christmas cards! They are not, however, the best fit for full-blown portrait sessions (with outfit changes, for example) or large groups. Those sessions take more time than Mini's allow. If you are interested in large group or families of more than 5, please email me (brijoelle@yahoo.com), call (530.713.1032), or send me a message on Facebook!
A $50 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot.

Justin & Candice: Wedding at Peach Tree

Love. Tender, sweet, soul-touching love. I have to say that I have photographed many weddings in my years as a photographer, but not all have touched me quite like Justin and Candice's did. I was truly honored to be a part of their big day, and thankful that I was able to experience the love that they had for one another. I just knew that when this couple was at the altar, exchanging their vows, they were committing forever not only to a lover, but a best friend. I still feel my heart swell a little, every time I look at their photos.

There is nothing like the moment when you take the dress off the hanger and it sinks in that it is not another fitting...

Catching up!

So I have some blogging to catch up on. I have been a busy little bee the past couple of months. There has been babies born, a couple has gotten married, and that first birthday milestone came and went for one special little guy you might recognize, seeing as how he has been on this blog before. Little Max hit the big 0-1 in May, and he got all dressed up for the occasion...

And if the muscles didn't win you over, his big brown eyes, sweet smile and dimples will.

I think what I love most about watching and photographing children is how all the small things are big things to them. The things we, as adults, take for granted, are pure fascination in the eyes of a one-year old.

Happy Birthday Max. My wish for you is that every year of your life, you find things that fascinate and intrigue you as much as a leaf did at One!

This family was a blast to work with. Having a family with all boys, Mom didn't want to take the typical outdoor pics (you know, flowers, trees, etc.) She wanted something a little bit more rugged, so we bounced a few ideas back and forth, and decided metal and dirt was more manly.

4 years later...

I am always on here, saying how I can't believe how the past 3, 6, 9, etc. months have flown, and how much the people (both big and small) that I photograph change. Well, this particular session was no different. In fact, it drove the fact deeply home. Four years ago, I took pictures of this darling little blonde girl, right before her 8th grade graduation.

She was so excited to be venturing on to bigger and better things... HIGH SCHOOL! Ahhh, memories....

Flash forward 4 years.

My how that little girl with braces has grown! We had so much fun during her shoot, tempting the elements (wind, and oh yes, it rained!)...

She has definitely grown into a beautiful lady, and I couldn't be more thrilled to have been able to photograph her then and now.

My goodness, how time flies. I know we all say this, but sometimes the realization that it is more than just a cliche, smashes into you like an out of control semi truck who's driver fell asleep at the wheel!
This past year has been full of so many changes, some bad but mostly all good (thank you God!), that all the days seem to blend together in my memory. I can't believe it is already June... wish I had a pause button. Then again, I saw Click....
One year (and a couple of days) ago, this sweet little guy entered the world with ten fingers...

and ten toes.

I have had the honor to not only photograph him every three months, but to visit with him weekly, and watch as both his physical appearance and his personality have grown.

3 months

6 months (poor little guy was not happy laying in the cold leaves!)

9 months

11.5 months

He amazes me. He doesn't say "mama" or "dada" yet (at least not intentionally) but he says "thank you" if you give him something he was asking for. (Okay, so the thank you sounds more like shza shzu, but you know that is what he is saying! Melts my heart.) I can't wait to watch him as he starts to walk and run. We still have to take his official 1 year pictures, complete with cake smashing and all. Can't wait.

Thank you A & M for letting me be a part of your lives this past year. It's been fun!
And, of course, HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPENCER!

The Dodd Family

Some of you may remember back to the beginning of the year when I introduced my new logo, I held a contest in honor to share my excitement with all of my supporters. Beth Dodd was the winner, and in April, myself and her family of six got together for a fun, relaxed afternoon of picture-taking!

Beth's four children are totally adorable, each with such a distinct personality of their own.

There was a lot of love in this family and everyone seemed to genuinely enjoy each others company.

I know many of you have been wondering where I went... it's been awhile since my last post... almost 2 months! YIKES! I know, that is entirely unacceptable! Not that I want to make excuses, but in those past two months I got married to the love of my life, and have been very busy with senior shoots, family shoots, maternity shoots, etc.... I can't tell you how much fun it is to photograph siblings. And I suppose there is a special place in my heart for brothers and sisters, seeing as how I have only two brothers myself. Whenever I see a brother and sister being goofy with eachother, it really does flash me back 20+ years.

Yes, it is that time of year again. There is a frosty bite in the morning air that quickly gives over to the warm, penetrating rays from the sun as it climbs away from the horizon.... *SIGH* I just love Springtime. The world around us begins to awake from its sleepy winter slumber, and everywhere we turn, we see new signs of life. So how fitting was it to have a maternity shoot on such a perfect Spring morning.

I had an awesome time traveling around to the blossoming orchards with this gorgeous Mama-to-be. We wondered about what her little one was going to look like, and whether or not he was going to be stubborn, or come on time.

So, if any of you out there have actually ever taken a look at the SITES I LOVE section on this page, you have seen JenLuvs2Shop. For all you ladies out there that love make-up (as I do!!) Jen's page is full of make-up tips and tricks. Jen, who just happens to be one of my very good friends, asked me the other day if I would photograph the highly anticipated Alice In Wonderland eyeshadow pallet from Urban Decay. She was anxious to blog about it, but hates her camera ("It just doesn't do it justice!"). Of course I agreed, and here are a few for you to check out.... If your anything like me, it will make you want to go and buy some new eyeshadow (like I need any more!).

This isn't exactly a photo post... It is a post to ask you all to take a moment to say a prayer for a family who has a rough road ahead of them. Nolan, 1 1/2 years old, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphblastic Leukemia on Feb. 1, 2010. He starts his first round of treatment tomorrow, and I simply can NOT imagine what his family is going through. If you can, take a moment and show Nolan's family your support. I have a feeling they will need all the support they can get.

A Day in the Rain

Typically, a rainy day means that the camera stays nestled in the camera bag, safe from the possibility of moisture invading any crevice of the somewhat vulnerable body. But with all the rain we have been having, my camera was having a bout of "cabin fever." So, I decided that, for a shoot I had scheduled this last Sunday, I would rig up a rain coat for my camera, and go for it! (Thank you Ziploc!!!) I had a blast.

This picture totally cracks me up because if I was to do this to either one of my brothers now, I would get the same reaction!

This brother and sister were too much fun! So full of energy and life... it was invigorating. I remember having that much fun with my brothers when I was little. Made me miss being a kid.

2009 was a bit of a whirlwind. Although it flew by, the year came to a close with tremendous growth, both on a personal level and on the business front. A new logo for Winks Photography is currently in the making, which many of you already know. I am very excited to share it with you all, so hopefully it will not be long into the new year when I am able to show the finished product! My designer is wonderful (Designs by Taz), and she designed a logo that called to me, in the first try! Now we are just fine-tuning it a bit, so stay tuned! I will unveil it to the world as soon as it is perfect!

Thank you to EVERYONE who did pictures with me!! It was such a blast, photographing you all. Each and every one of you gave me the opportunity to spread my wings a little bit more, and for that, I can't thank you enough. I think 2010 will be my year to fly. So, cheers and an emphatic "goodbye" to 2009, and Cead Mile Failte to 2010!

The Many Expressions of Spencer

One of the things that I absolutely love about photography is being able to recognize and capture all the expressions that people make, which tell us who they are. Our personalities exist from the very beginning. A look of contempt, of glee, of frustration, of sadness... All are ways to communicate a little bit of ourselves to the world. Of course we change over time, but many a parent can look back at a photo of their child (if it was a true capture of an expression) and say, "they still make that face, to this day!"

Little Miss Maya

I have been photographing Maya from the time she was in the womb. She is usually a rather shy kid, taking several minutes to warm up to my crazy acrobatics and silly faces (all intended to induce a smile). On this day, however, Maya greeted me at the door with a giant hug and was full of smiles and laughter throughout the entire shoot. I don't know how I lucked out, but I am certainly thankful to have had such a fun shoot!

Now I'm posting his 3Mo. pics. Crazy!! I can't believe how much this little man is growing and changing. It never fails that a parent will schedule a shoot around the fairly consistent routine of their munchkin, and when the day arrives, it all goes out the window. Such was the case with Sophia. Her mommy scheduled her pictures during what is her "I just woke up and I am in a sweet and happy mood" time. On this day, though, she woke up hours earlier than normal and by the time we were ready to shoot, she was ready to nap! She was so tuckered out, she fell asleep in daddy's arms, with her cheek smashed against his watch! It was so sweet.

This handsome little guy happens to be my nephew. I spend so much time photographing other families that it is not often that I get to photograph my own! Killian came for a visit at the beginning of August, so naturally I jumped on the opportunity to get some pics of my boy! I hadn't taken photos of him since he was three weeks old, so it was so exciting to see his personality open up before the camera. He was so much fun, playing peek-a-boo with me....

I have been dying to do a shoot on a beach, and when I got the opportunity to photograph Steve and Amber in Fort Bragg, I jumped on it right away. The weather was gorgeous that weekend- highs in the lower 70s with a cool breeze...blue, sunny, cloudless skies...I could not have imagined a better day. I think what made it even better was knowing that back in Yuba it was 110 degrees! Thanks Steve and Amber for an awesome weekend!

One of the neatest things about being a photographer is being a part of some of the most memorable and special days in people's lives. Weddings, birthdays, and in the case of Spencer's shoot, Father's Day. His daddy was so proud to finally be a daddy, he was sporting a tank top that said so! ( I was informed that that was Spencer's Father's Day present to his pa.) It is always fun for me to see new parents filled with love, happiness, and pride. Knowing what a true blessing and miracle Spencer was makes me realize what a privilege it was for me witness one very proud papa's very first Father's Day.

Back in March I had the opportunity to take some maternity photos for Randi. We had a lot of fun and got tons of great pictures. I was fortunate enough to photograph Randi's wedding (with Hughston's Photography) a few years ago, so it was an honor to be able to capture the next big moment in Randi's life!
